Stability of Tone 2 F0 Contours across Different Syllable Structures in Mandarin
نویسنده
چکیده
The syllables of Mandarin are usually divided into four different structures. Previous studies on adults and children reported the features of F0 contours across different syllable structures in Mandarin. This paper presents the stability of some parameters of Tone 2 F0 contours across different syllable structures. The indicator of stability for F0 is Standard Deviation (SD) while the parameters include syllable duration, initial duration, time of maximum/minimum F0 and maximum/minimum frequency F0. In order to observe the stability of the tone, four native speakers of Beijing Mandarin were recorded using the same syllable table for Tone 2. This experiment found that the SDs for time of minimum F0 correlated with the syllable structures, and the SDs for the most complex syllables were higher than other syllables. However, the other parameters did not show correlation with their syllable structures.

Mandarin Tones Recognition by Segments of Fundamental Frequency Contours
Mandarin is one of the tonal languages. In Mandarin tones, there are four lexical tones (tone 1 to tone 4) with four different fundamental frequency (f0), such as flat and high, rising, falling and then rising, and falling, respectively. In order to process signal on lexical tone, at first we have to identify which tone is. We would like to find out an efficient approach to identify Mandarin to...
متن کاملInformation for Mandarin tones in the amplitude contour and in brief segments.
While the tones of Mandarin are conveyed mainly by the F0 contour, they also differ consistently in duration and in amplitude contour. The contribution of these factors was examined by using signal-correlated noise stimuli, in which natural speech is manipulated so that it has no F0 or formant structure but retains its original amplitude contour and duration. Tones 2, 3 and 4 were perceptible f...
متن کاملNeutral Tone Realization in Tianjin Mandarin
This study examines the acoustic realization of neutral tone in Tianjin Mandarin, which shows great variability in the f0 patterns. Previous studies, mainly with impressionistic data, have proposed that the neutral tone in Tianjin Mandarin has different underlying tonal targets depending on the tonal contexts, in particular the following tone. This presents a great challenge to the crossdialect...
متن کاملF 0 Peak Delay in Mandarin F 0 Peak Delay in Mandarin
F0 peak delay (henceforth peak delay) refers to the phenomenon that an F0 peak sometimes occurs after the syllable it is associated with either lexically or prosodically. Although peak delay has been reported for various languages, the mechanism of its occurrence has so far remained unclear. In Mandarin, peak delay has been found to occur regularly in the R (Rising) tone but not in the H (High)...
متن کاملPhonetic complexity affects children’s Mandarin tone production accuracy in disyllabic words: A perceptual study
This is the first study to examine the effect of phonetic contexts on children's lexical tone production. Mandarin tones in disyllabic words produced by forty-four 2- to 6-year-old children and twelve mothers were low-pass filtered to eliminate lexical information. Native Mandarin-speaking adults categorized the tones based on the pitch information in the filtered stimuli. All mothers' tones we...
